Oxford Milestones: Surviving toll houses in Oxfordshire


Some toll houses such as the one that guarded the gates into St Clement's and the Iffley Road on the site of the present Victoria Fountain and the one at Headington crossroads have been demolished.

The following Oxfordshire toll-houses survive. They are all listed buildings, and are linked to their Historic England list entry overview (click the oblong link near the top reading “Official List Entry” for a second page with more details)

The toll-gates would have been attached to the above toll houses, as shown in the two images below.

This postcard shows the toll house that no longer exists which was attached to the old St Clement's Church, with the gate on the left leading to St Clement's and the one on the right leading to the Iffley Road. It became redundant in 1869.

This image below shows the small toll house with gates attached to the right of pub on the road to Woodstock at the turning to Yarnton and is taken from Cuthbert Bede, The Further Adventures of Mr Verdant Green (Part II, Chapter X), published in 1854. The pub is unchanged, but the toll house was rebuilt.
