Oxford Ghost Signs: Acott's Music Warehouse at 124 High Street

Acott mosaic

Customers who enter 124 High Street (recently All Bar One and now vacant) still walk over this mosaic at the entrance that proclaims Acott. The musical putti in the spandrels over the door (below) also remember the music shop and can easily be dated, as the scroll on the left is inscribed AD and the one on the right MCMXI (1911).

Musical putti

Sydney Acott, a dealer in musical instruments, moved here in about 1894.

The business became Russell Acott in 1950 when it was taken over by James Russell's music shop, and closed in 1998.
